FOCUSING with CHILDREN

(including our Inner Children)

This will be of interest to anyone interested in listening to children (inner & outer)  in a special way, a way that allows them to be heard while maintaining boundaries, to express themselves even in situations that seem difficult or overwhelming.

Parents, grandparents, teachers, therapists, social workers, other healing practitioners and all Focusers will gain valuable insights and skills to allow them to be more effective in their communication with children and with themselves.

FOCUSING & CHILDREN

Focusing teaches children to:

• make contact with a bodily sense of specific problems or situations
• explore the meaning of their inner experience
• experience difficult, sad or angry feelings without being overwhelmed by them or denying them
• learn to express feelings in appropriate and useful ways
• concentrate better on everyday tasks at home and at school
• listen to other children and empathize with them, even at times of conflict.

FACILITATOR:

René Veugelers is a Psychiatric Nurse and Art Therapist who works with children and teenagers, specializing in non-verbal communication.  As a Focusing Trainer and Coordinator for Children Focusing, he teaches parents, therapists, teachers and others how to be with children in a Focusing way. René lives in Holland and has taught internationally. He is an enthusiastic and inspiring teacher, who brings his experience, subtlety and joy to every training and workshop.  René is supported in his teachings by Nico Verschoor, a Children Focusing Professional, who brings his ‘sparkling energy’ to all his endeavors.

Focusing is …

• A way of paying attention to our inner experience.  It is a means of tuning in and listening in a friendly way to our bodies. Through this we can learn from the body’s wisdom.  Focusing gives us access to a deep level of knowing, leading to inner transformation.
• Focusing is a step by step process of paying attention to a bodily felt sense of a situation, event or issue in one’s life.
• When given enough time and attention this body felt sense unfolds to enable you to make lasting change in your life.  
• Focusing is both a natural process that all of us have experienced at one time or another and a simple way of being with oneself that anyone can learn.
• The process was ‘rediscovered’ and named in the 1950s and 60s by Eugene Gendlin, a philosopher and psychotherapist, who worked extensively with Carl Rogers.

(Focusing is not psychotherapy, neither is it a method of concentration, nor a system of meditation, though Focusing can greatly enhance each of these.)

Does Healing Journey imply that there’s something wrong with me?
NO! You are perfect just the way you are. Along our life’s journey, we pick-up habits that don’t always serve us. They tend to inhibit us from being who we truly are. You know that voice —that voice that tells you are not good enough, not smart enough, not …enough. In this course you befriend these voices, make space for who you truly are and befriend the wise person in you.

If I wanted to take the Healing Journey course how long is it?
It is 36 hours. That may sound a little abstract. It means 3 hours per week for 12 weeks.

Does everyone have a purpose?  
The Dalai Lama states that our purpose in life is to be happy. So then why are we not? There are lots of reasons—what we need to keep in mind is that the only person you can change is yourself.  Your journey is to be curious about yourself and explore what may be holding you back. Change happens organically when you simply stop to observe yourself and your environment.

 If I wanted to take a course on Energy medicine how long is it?
There are three levels of Energy Medicine at NHC. Energy Medicine I, II, III. Energy Medicine I is 36 hours. EM II is also 36 hours and EM III is shorter and spans 24 hours.

What does Energy Medicine I cover?
As you can imagine there is no way that we can cover all those subjects in 36 hours. So in this course you start by understanding your body’s energy field, your body’s messages and you will learn how to balance your energy by understanding the Chakra systems.

What does that mean “our body’s messages”?
First of all, the body is a map of your story. There’s an interconnection between environment and your body. This interaction is encoded in every cell. By experiencing your body energetically, you can gain a new perspective on the story you have about yourself. Then, as you realize what seeds to the future your body holds, you will be able to start making meaningful change.

We hear the word “Chakras” a lot, but what are they?
Quite literally, “chakra” is a sanskrit word meaning “wheel” or “vortex”. You could conceptualize them as the body’s energetic circulatory system. Seven chakras are taught in our western society(below is a visual description). However, the system dates back thousands of years, originating in China and India. The idea is that each of these chakras (wheels) circulates energy through our bodies. These energy centers interact with our endocrine and nervous systems. Therefore, when one of our chakras is blocked, it may affect our body by creating physical symptoms, but also by creating emotional or spiritual symptoms.

I have big things to work on in my life, but I can’t afford to get sunk in them…
This course offers an opportunity to be able to look at your life issues with curiosity and from a distance. Einstein said that you cannot solve a problem from the same level in which it was created.  By understanding your body and what is mapped in your cells you will be able to change your habits and change your life.

This is a blog about exploration, discussion and curiously wondering about complimentary and alternatives practices for healing. Moreover we want to encourage discussions on how to create the possibility of an integrative approach toward health. You may wonder who the heck are we to want to do this in the first place?

We are a non-profit vibrant school of holistic healthcare education. For 20 years we have accomplished our mission through courses and career diplomas catering to working professionals, curious individuals and the next generation of holistic healthcare practitioners.

We share a passion to serve, explore, explain and apply the integral correlation between body, mind, spirit and our larger body, the Earth. We achieve this by integrating consciousness and science, inspiring personal growth.

We believe that this understanding of health is critical to the sustainability of human life and to our greater harmony and happiness.

While our school has approximately 300 students per year and 30 teachers, we are a small staff of 6, this includes me, Chiara Borrello. I am the director of the school. For the most part you will be hearing my voice. And I hope to include many other links and posts that our teachers, students, alumni, friends and staff want to share with you. I look forward to this virtual relationship. And I also hope to meet you at our humble abode. We are in an old home located on Girouard avenue in NDG. One of our claim to fame is that William Shatner was supposedly born and lived here with his family until the age of 6 or 7.
